How to choose the right yarn weight and ply

Knitting projects will look different with some types of yarns. That is where ply comes in. A ply refers to individual strands twisted together. Yarn weight refers to the thickness of the thread.

A yarn with more strands creates a more textured appearance. Most popular are the worsted weight yarns - medium thickness yarn which is easier to knit. A single ply yarn will be better for softer looking outcome.

When buying a yarn on, for example, Etsy.com, you will encounter US - UK yarn weight system, which has eight categories:

    1. Lace - it is a super lightweight yarn, thin and very delicate and fragile.

    2. Fingering & Sock - superfine, but heavier than lace.

    3. Sport - good for light projects and baby clothes.

    4. DK & Light worsted - most popular yarn weight. DK means double knitting and is used when knitting with two strands of yarn. Good for outdoor wear and winter clothing.

    5. Bulky - thicker than worsted yarns, chunky. Great for craft projects.

    6. Super Bulky - even thicker yarn, used for big projects.

    7. Jumbo - quite a recent addition. Used in arm knitting.
