DIY weaved newspaper basket

This is a cool little project you can do quite quickly and without much effort.

Using scissors, cut a newspaper in roughly equal strips.

This will be used to make paper straws that are going to be used in weaving.

Put a bit of glue on one corner of the paper strip and place a rod or something similar at approx. 45 degree angle next to the corner.

Now using your fingers roll the rod with the paper the full length of the strip to the end. You should have made a roughly equal paper straw now. And make sure to make a lot of them.

Take seven straws and place them in a cross pattern on top of each other. Take the seventh straw and wrap it around the centre of the cross as shown in the picture above.

Take a new straw, add it to the end of the first one and keep going, passing over every other straw.

Continue until you get to the size of the bottom of the basket, now you can start on the walls.

The process is the same as the base  of a basket, only thing different is that you bend the base straws upward and doing so you shorten the path of  the straw. And because the path is now the same for every straw onward, you end up with walls.

Keep going up until decide it is enough or you just run out of straws. In the end just bend the straw ends which are sticking out in-between the lower layers.

  1. Do you have any other ideas for making with this technique? It will be interesting to see. Because it looks neat and easy.
